Mammography gets a whole lot clearer

Granted, digital mammography has been around since 2001, but as with all technology, it continues to advance.

And that's why Jeff Brown, director of radiology and cardiology services at St. Mary's Hospital in Athens, is pleased with the latest upgrade in breast cancer detection technology at the hospital - a new Hologic Selenia digital mammography unit.

"It's made an enormous difference in the image quality," Brown said, adding St. Mary's has had digital mammography since 2005.

In layman's terms, that means the image has greater contrast, "so we're just able to see a lot better into the (breast) tissue," he said. "What we had before was great, but with this, even some of the radiologists and technicians have been amazed at the detail," he said.

Brown, who came to St. Mary's from Rome in May, said the Hologic Selenia comes by way of Hologic, a company he said is on the leading edge of technology, and credits the company for its work in breast cancer prevention as well.
