Madison's water clears but not stains

HULL - Turning on a water faucet in her home turned into a crapshoot for Melissa Atkinson.

Most days, water would come out clear and clean. Other days, without warning, the water would become a muddy brown and destroy her laundry, interrupt her daughter's bath and stain her sinks and toilets.

Atkinson took a jar of the dirty water and a petition signed by other residents with the same problem in the Windsor Heights subdivision in Hull to Madison County commissioners' meeting last month. County officials have since cleaned the water system, which they believe should fix the problem.

"We redid the filtration system on (Georgia) Highway 72, and installed a new iron removal system and drained and cleaned the water tanks," said Marvin White, director of the county Industrial Development Authority that is responsible for the county's water utility. "We've got the problem fixed - we hope."

Officials don't know for sure what caused the water to turn so brown in about 10 homes inside the subdivision off Glenn Carrie Road between Ga. 72 and U.S. Hig
