Police clear truck thief suspect of robbing bank
Investigators no longer think the man who stole and wrecked a pickup truck Tuesday is the same person who robbed a bank that afternoon, Athens-Clarke police said.
It probably was just a coincidence that 28-year-old Brandon Satterfield stole the truck on Sycamore Drive about the same time a similar-looking man held up the Regions Bank branch at 2009 Prince Ave., according to police.
"We're investigating coincidences and similarities to the robbery that just happened to happen simultaneously," said Athens-Clarke police Capt. Clarence Holeman, commanding officer of Centralized Criminal Investigations.
Satterfield does resemble witnesses' description of the robber: a white man in his late 20s or early 30s, about 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing about 145 pounds.
But witnesses said the robber stuttered, and Satterfield does not, Holeman said.
"Our investigation is not riding on Satterfield," he said. "We have an open mind and other avenues to pursue."
